Ana Tijoux’s January 31, 2012 release of her long-awaited sophomore album ’La Bala’ (Nacional Records) was a tremendous success, debuting on two Billboard charts. The follow-up to her critically acclaimed, GRAMMY nominated debut ‘1977,’ ‘La Bala’ debuted at #2 on the Billboard ‘Rhythmic Latin Albums’ sales chart (right behind Don Omar) and #40 on the Top Latin Albums sales chart, based solely on first week digital sales. The physical edition of the album was released this week.

The lead single “Shock” and the album have been receiving much critical acclaim with multiple features on NPR as well as praise fromThe Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, theBoston Globe and more. In addition, the single has been receiving massive radio support with spins on key tastemaker stations KCRW, KUT, KEXP and KCMP to name a few. A political testimony to the massive student protests occurring in Chile and around the world, ‘Shock,’ is a musical snapshot of the current milieu of unrest.  “Writing this song, I was inspired by these social movements, writing from my perspective as a mother, musician and citizen.  I thought it was important to pay homage to these protesters,” Tijoux explains.

The buzz behind ‘La Bala’ has been building since Tijoux’s debut ‘1977’ bubbled up from an underground sensation into mainstream recognition, with features on the hit TV show ‘Breaking Bad’ and the soundtrack to the EA Sports’ videogame FIFA ‘11.  Profiled on MTV Tr3s’ “Descubre & Download” and invited to perform on NPR’s influential “Tiny Desk Concert” series, Ana Tijoux’s “1977” was also featured as the iTunes “Single Of The Week” and was one of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke's favorite tracks, with more than 1 million views on YouTube. ‘La Bala’ is available on iTunes and Amazon.com.

Ana Tijoux made her U.S. debut performing at SXSW in 2010, and has since toured the U.S. and Europe extensively, including stops at New York’s Central Park Summerstage, San Francisco’s Outside Lands and Chicago’s Lollapalooza.  During GRAMMY weekend, Ana Tijoux performed ‘1977’ with The Roots as her backing band.

La Bala’ features 11 new songs from Ana Tijoux, featuring collaborations with Academy Award winning musician Jorge Drexler, Chilean rap crew Solo Di Medina (formerly La Pozze Latina), and Cuban hip-hop group Los Aldeanos. The album was recorded in Tijoux’s hometown of Santiago Chile, and mixed and mastered in Detroit, Michigan.

Tijoux was born in France to a French mother and a Chilean father in political exile during Pinochet's dictatorship. After the return to democracy, the family moved to Chile. She found a home in the emerging hip-hop scene of Santiago and first started rhyming in French, then later in Spanish.

She has been featured on tracks by Argentine electronic-tango collective Bajofondo, Mexican hip hop icons Control Machete and Chilean beat master DJ Bitman. But it was her collaboration with Mexican rock star Julieta Venegas on the hit track, “Eres Para Mi,” which helped expose Tijoux to a mainstream audience. The song became a TV and radio smash hit across Latin America and the U.S.

On her debut album ‘1977,’ Tijoux proved her abilities as a true “rapera” through her jazzy vocals, sophisticated lyrics and hynoptic beats. The album, named for her year of birth, paints a picture of her childhood in France and pays homage to the early 90s era of hip-hop that influenced her as a teenager in Chile.
