Exclusive Listening: Fat Joe's J.O.S.E. 2
Posted by: CorrienteLatina Posted: 03-02-2009Last Thursday, I got the chance to hear the new Fat Joe album, Jealous Ones Still Envy 2 (J.O.S.E. 2), at an exclusive listening session. It was supposed to be myself and a few other scribes but it ended being just me, Joey Crack, his publicist and his right hand man Macho. It was as Joe put it, “Well, we just playing this album for you...you’re the first to hear the album. [You can say] it’s from Jose to Jesus.” Here’s another tidbit: “I’m making it really hard for the next Latino MC to come up...he’s coming up against the legend.” To each is own, right? Below is a tracklisting with my impression and Joe’s reactions.
Uno,
Jesus
“Winding On Me” f/ Ron Browz and Lil Wayne) Producer: Ron Browz
Jesus says: Sounds like another stripper anthem.
Jose says: "Let's get it."
“Hey Joe” Producer: Infamous
Jesus says: Straight boom bap.
Jose says: “’Hey Joe’ is that NY corner block shit.”
Lyric: “Bullets are like EZ Pass they run right through you”
“One” f/ Akon, Producer: The Incredibles
Jesus says: I heard it.
Jose says: “You heard it? Let’s move on.”
“Put You In The Game” f/ T-Pain and OZ, Producer: Shief
Jesus says: Another single for radio…damn Joey knows how to adapt to the times. Ugghh the typical T-Pain-ish backdrop.
Jose says: “This is probably my second single. It’s got T-Pain and my artist OZ on it.”
“Congratulations” f/ T.A. and Rico Love, Producer: Eric Hudson
Jesus says: This is one of the dopest tracks on the album. It’s lively, happy…just what we need now.
Jose says: “This might be my favorite song on the album.”
Lyric: “...."Lemme guess you gonna have sex tonight. . . when you take it off probably gonna see cellulite!" OK?!
“Porn Star” f/ Lil Kim, Producer: Jim Jonsin
Jesus says: This is a dirty, sweaty, stinky sex track. And ain’t nothing wrong with it.
Jose says: “It’s a privilege to work with Lil Kim and Jim Jonsin. This song is strip club city!”
Lil Kim Hook: “I got you moaning like a porn star, my lips are big, my hips are curvy, my body is sick, I like it dirty”
Fat Joe lyric: “Puerto Rican to the core, you know boricuas eat the c***a”
“Cupcake” f/ Ben Soir, Producer: Shief
Jesus says: ...
Jose says: “When you in Miami they listen to a certain kind of music; ‘Cupcake’ is ghetto trap music.”
Lyric: “I'm a muhf**kin menace to society, I'm a f**kin’ rebel…I'm on the grind moving those cupcakes”
“Me and My Bitch” f/ OZ, Producer: Calvo
Jesus says: I starting responding to emails.
Jose says: Joe started doing graffiti on a piece of paper.
“Here We Go” f/ Fabolous and Rico Love, Producer: PIT
Jesus says: Another money bragging song during the recession.
Jose says: . . .
“Ice Cream” f/ TA and Raekwon, Producer: Kevin of The Incredibles
Jesus says: It’s cool that he got Rae for this joint. The track is even a lil’ reminiscent of the original Rae banger.
Jose says: “That’s that zone right there.”
“Okay Okay” Producer: Drew of The Incredibles
Jesus says: It’s an ominous sounding track. The hook sounds very bodega owner-esque..Okaay! Okaaay!
Jose says: “This is vintage Fat Joe. I had to give the fans a reflection of the past”
Lyric: "No jokes, no gimmicks, you talking to n****s who live the lyrics"
“Music” Producer: Raw Uncut
Jesus says: It’s decent. It’s interesting to hear Joe trying to dispel accusations of him being a money-grubbing boss.
Jose says: “This is my favorite beat I ever rapped to in my life. It's a very deep song"
